CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Daughtry's magic surged along the bond, free at last, desperate to connect with Cody's. She watched in amazement as it healed the fragile connection of their minds, turned the pale, brittle strands into thick ropes of deep purple.
Cody's emerald magic rose in suit, meeting hers more than halfway. It flowed into her mind, spread through her limbs, settled over her skin.
The connection had always been like that, a warm blanket, the very description of home and comfort.
Impossible to resist.
She could hear Cody's every thought, feel his every emotion. And there were a lot of them.
Love. Hope. Fear. Disappointment. Affection.
A whirling, swirling snowstorm of feelings.
When the bond had settled, retreated again into the background of her mind, she opened her eyes.
Cody stood before her, his mouth open, arms limp at his sides. "Why did you—?"
"You've never understood your appeal, have you?" She patted his cheek. "You were right. I needed to see for myself."
It was right to talk to him that way, to have his magic interlaced with her own. They were the flip sides of the coin. He the healer. She the killer. Their powers were polar opposites and in that, the universe found balance.
"You're not a killer."
Her lips curved up into what was probably a pathetically small smile. "Tell that to my past." She continued before he could contradict her. "But with the success of Kaitlin, I hope that — maybe — I can change that.
"You're perfect," he said, his eyes intense as he bent to meet her own. "Just the way you are."
"And you're laying it on thick," she told him.
"Daughtry." A warning.
One she didn't heed. "Cody."
"You don't see yourself clearly."
She rolled her eyes. "I've said it before but I'll say it again. Pot meet kettle."
His sigh was that of a man who knew this battle was lost. Smart one that he was, Cody changed the subject. "Who's Seth?"
She sank back against the tree, the soil soft, almost springy beneath her. It was a surprisingly comfortable seat.
Exhaustion had soaked into her limbs, making them heavy and almost useless. Using her magic always exhausted her. Today was no different. She might have not actively called it forth, but unconscious use or not, her body still needed time to recover.
"Seth is Dominic's brother," she said then shook her head. "Well, he's Dominic's friend, but the Forgotten consider each other family because of everything they've been through."
The lid of the plastic container she still held in her hands made a popping noise as she pulled it off. When the cookie hit her tongue, a sigh slipped between her lips.
Medicating with chocolate. Now that was what she needed.
Cody sat next to her, shoulder to shoulder, thigh to thigh.
"Tell me the truth." At her words, he looked over sharply. "Laila did most of the work, didn't she?"
Cody smirked. "That's remarkably sexist of you."
"Don't think I haven't noticed that you didn't answer."
"Fine," he grumbled. "Make a guy tell you all of his secrets. I added the eggs." He mock-flexed. "And these arms were a requirement for the stirring.
